Happy New Year Everyone!
I apologise for the lack of updates and direction for the community. For the past 1 year+, I have been focusing a lot on my career and personal growth. Recently, I just switched from a full time job to a temp job (Nah, i’m not retrenched), so I’ve yet to have a stable job. But I have been crazily upskilling and learnt so much I wish to share with everyone and apply them on the development of our community.
With so many things going on around issues with Covid-19, the future of SMCRM is extremely uncertain. As most of you know, our community centre is scheduled for renovation and there may not be continuation of our weekly mahjong activities there due to change of management. We had been engaging other community centre for our relocation. Edwin had asked Nee Soon South CC to write to Teck Ghee CC about it but while waiting for updates, we got hit by Covid-19, making everything stalled.
So what now? I do want to continue official riichi activities in offline setting. The reason why we didn’t push everything to online mahjong because I know we can’t really provide anything significantly better than you playing online mahjong yourself. So we have been laying the groundwork for us to continue to play offline mahjong as a community rather than remotely. It may or may not work, but i do have an idea and everyone’s understanding and cooperation is extremely important. The details will be revealed soon once there’s enough information gathered.
SMCRM IS DEAD
We are now phase 3, but I don’t wish to bet on whether we can resume club activities in C.C. Touch wood but phase 2 might return. Nobody can be certain. So let’s face this for now – Sport Mahjong Club Riichi Maajan is dead. Its gone till further notice.
Instead, we will now be everywhere, under SgRiichi Community. SgRiichi will coordinate with Riichi clubs (NUS Riichi & SMU I-Sports & future clubs) in terms of pooling in our resources and efforts together for all riichi players to benefit from. Clubs organise their own events and league but we will share the same platform for the following functions:
- Communication & Advertising – Telegram. It is compulsory for all to use telegram. Discord for streaming or events purpose if necessary.
- Score Recording – Destin has created a telegram bot for all of us to record our every hand result. Now in final adjustment stage.
- Players’ ratings, play-style statistic and diagnostic tool, tournament/league reporting – Google Data Studio. Details to be revealed soon.
- Mahjong strategies resources in 1 place – To be confirmed
Telegram – Main communication platform
We will only be disseminating information through 1 platform – Telegram. No more posting on facebook and whatsapp broadcast.
As of now, there will be 2 SgRiichi telegram groups and 1 SgRiichi channel. It is compulsory to be in the channel otherwise you will be…quite remote.
Please join them now at https://t.me/joinchat/Tzl4zo8CMp0f11W6
There will be a form in the link, please fill up (for everyone, old/new players)
More updates will be provided soon in the channel but now, I have to make sure every riichi player is know about this change and get them on board.
I understand that not everyone has telegram. But because Telegram has A LOT of functions, and they are crucial to our operation and communication. There are many bots we can use to make communication convenience for us and I can’t wait to expose these functions to you. So thank you for your understanding. If you don’t use telegram at all, you can treat this as a SgRiichi app.
If you are a regular telegram user and feel that there are too many riichi-related groups/channel there is a folder setting in telegram to group all your chats together to better manage it! I personally have a folder with all the riichi-related groups. You can archieve all of them and still appear in your folder. With just 1 click on the riichi folder, all the riichi-related chats will be shown.

This year will be a revamp of how we communicate, operate and grow as a community. We will keep up with technology, improve players engagement, increasing out-reach to new players together with improving the new players onboarding experience.
Let’s play more mahjong, have more fun, good improvement at the same time, maintain good grades (if you are schooling) and make good career progression (if you are working)!
CHEERS to start of a fantastic year ahead!
