All the while, I’ve been thinking about getting our riichi community together, learn from each other and enjoy the game more as we hone our skills.
In the current SMC environment, it is not a good learning environment as we cannot be too noisy. I’ve received feedback from past riichi players that players are pretty much left to themselves without guidance and everything in SMC is ranked based (this is the only thing that encourages us to play to our best).
It has been 6 years since the riichi mahjong section was founded and I’ve played equally long. During these 6 years, I would say I have had a lot of improvement but only to stagnate for the past 2 years. So how do we improve ourselves in a game whereby you cannot trust the outcome of the decision made of that particular game? It is to read mahjong theories and strategies, making a conscious effort to apply them. Most of the time this requires the help of online mahjong platform as you can take a screenshot of the reply and cross-check with everyone (the community) to see whether the decision you have made is optimal and what reason does it based on?
Ultimately in a game of variance, luck and uncertainty, we can only focus on making the decision based on the CORRECT reason so that we can produce good results consistently.
Although I’m aware that I belong to the stronger group of players as shown by the results, I’ve always try to refrain from writing strategies or so-called promoting myself to give advice or teach players how to play better because I don’t wish to think that the things I officially publish or preach are of proper learning materials.
I was criticised to having imposter syndrome and why I shouldn’t think like this. I accept it and therefore I’m going to start a telegram group on Riichi mahjong strategies whereby I will share What-Will-You-Discard/Do (WWYD) screenshots for everyone to participate and practice what they know/have learnt. Anybody can post their screenshots as well.
But to prevent the group from becoming a “just-ask-feng-for-answer” and how the rest of the players no longer see a need to participate after my input, I will only answer any WWYD 1 day after being posted.
To experienced players, if the answer to the WWYD seems too easy/obvious, would also like to ask you to refrain from commenting too fast as well.
My answer will just be a recommendation, feel free to disagree as it is part of my learning as well if I’ve made any mistake. Most importantly, do participate actively without fear of any judgement. This is the fastest way to improve and see the depth of Riichi Mahjong.
