As I’ve mentioned before that the current penalty system of deducting net points is rather ineffective already as net points play very little effect in the ranking. The change will be deducting rating instead.
Chombo Penalty
The Chombo Penalty will be a minus of 20 points in rating. The penalty will be applied to the following offences:
Offense | Penalty |
Invalid Agari | Minus 20 rating points |
Noten Riichi | |
Invalid Kan* |
*Invalid Kan
An Invalid Kan occurs during Riichi when the Kan made, changes the waiting pattern and/or changes the interpreted sequence or triplets.
Example 1
Upon drawing 6p, 7p or 8p, the kan cannot be made as the sets can be interpreted as either sequence or triplets. By doing a kan, it forces the hand to only be interpreted by 1 way. Therefore, this kan is invalid.
Example 2
Upon drawing 6m, 3m cannot be kan as the original hand read 345 as a sequence, by doing a kan of 3m, it changes the sequence to 456. Therefore, this kan is invalid.
Calls Penalty
The Calls Penalty will be a minus of 3 points in rating. This penalty will be applied to the following offences:
Offense | Penalty |
Silent Calls | 1st time – Warning 2nd time – Warning 3rd time and subsequent – Minus 3 rating points |
Empty Calls | |
Wrong Word used during calls | |
Calls during Dead Hand** |
**Under the WRC rules, this is subjected to Chombo Penalty but we will think it is too harsh for a club setting since it can be easily rectified and doesn’t disrupt the game nor it occurs so often that it annoys.
This effect is immediate. Past offenders of this year will be let off as warning.
