Beijing SMZY Technology Co. Ltd is organising the SMZY Cup International Mahjong Open (水木智娱杯国际麻将公开赛) in Macau, which will be held from 26th to 28th December 2017, to celebrate Christmas, the New Year, and the 18th anniversary of Macau’s return to China. The SMZY Cup International Mahjong Open is also a qualifying tournament for the 2nd World Mahjong Sports Games to be held next year, with more than 30 places at stake!
The tournament covers six events over the three days, comprising two main events, two short consolation events, and two exhibition events.
The two main events, held concurrently, are for MCR and for riichi maajan, each held through the three days of competition, with cuts.
The MCR main event will start with 160 competitors, which will be reduced to 96 after the first day (of 3 games), and finally to 48 competitors after the second day (of another 3 games). The final day will feature 4 more games. 10 WMSG places and a prize pool of 10,000 CNY are to be won!
The riichi maajan main event will start with 160 competitors, which will be reduced to 120 after the first day (of 4 hanchan), and finally to 72 competitors after the second day (of another 4 hanchan). The final day will feature 5 more hanchan. 20 WMSG places and a prize pool of 10,000 CNY are to be won!
Competitors who do not qualify for the finals of the two main events can try in the consolation events, which are held concurrently on the third day of the tournament, 28th December 2017. These are one-day events with eliminations after every game/hanchan!
The MCR knock-out event will start with 96 competitors. 48 competitors will continue on to the second game; and then 24 competitors move on to the third game. Only 8 competitors will survive to play in the fourth and final game, where the reward is 2 WMSG places!
The riichi maajan knock-out event will start with 128 competitors. 64 competitors will play on in the second hanchan; 32 competitors left will play in the third hanchan; and 16 competitors will move on to the fourth hanchan. The final 8 competitors will play in the fifth and final hanchan, where the reward is 2 WMSG places!
No details for the exhibition events (Sichuan mahjong and Guangdong mahjong) are available at the moment, other than the proposed number of competitors (each 48 players maximum) and the schedule (second and third days of the tournament).
This tournament will be held at The Venetian Macao. The rates as advertised here are from 2,288 to 5,088 CNY per competitor.

Important note/update: the number of WMSG places is proposed by SMZY. The final number to be awarded will be confirmed by the Mahjong International League, based on participation numbers and an assessment of the quality of the field. (Per Note 1 at the bottom of the announcement.)
